Restoration & History

Phase 1: We Have “Envisioned” Our Future

The campaign for the restoration and preservation of the Church of St. Francis Xavier began in 2001 with a visionary and ambitious goal: to ensure that this beautiful edifice endures. The generous support of you – our parishioners and friends – made possible the completion of Phase I, “Envisioning Our Future.”

Phase I saw the complete renovation of the exterior structure. Among the major accomplishments are:

  • Installation of a new roof
  • Replacement of the roof drainage system and snow guard systems
  • Repair and restoration of all windows and catwalks
  • Repair and cleaning of exterior walls, including mortar re-pointing, brick replacements, and the application of vapor permeable sealant
  • Complete restoration of the entry portico

We Continue to Envision Our Future in Phase II: “MOVING FORWARD”

“Rendering of our New Floor Plan”

Moving Forward in Renewal

Throughout the church, one particular theme resonates in the myriad carvings, moldings, glassworks and marble: the lily, symbol of Christ’s resurrection and promise of eternal life.

Like this beautiful flower, the theme of Phase II of our capital campaign echoes the spirit of life and renewal.

Moving forward in renovation

The Sanctuary renovation has already begun. In an event that parallels the theme of our Phase II Capital Campaign, the reredos, or former high altar, has literally been moved forward.

Still envisioned are:

  • New and improved accessibility ramps
  • New Baptismal Font
  • Integration of large Crucifix into the Jesuit Martyrs’ Shrine
  • New Confessional Room
  • Converting Confessionals into Shrines of the Saints
  • New Sacristy
  • Enlarged Music (East) Room

Moving forward in restoration

Also envisioned are:

  • Cleaning and painting the Church interior
  • Refurbishing and relocating the Church Organ and Pipes
  • Installing an air-conditioning system
  • Restoring and regilding of the Stations of the Cross and ceiling murals
  • Reinstalling historic lighting
  • Repairing and refinishing pews
  • Cleaning of the Italian marble pilasters and Mexican onyx inlays
  • Cleaning and repairing of the terrazzo floors
  • Cleaning and re-leading stained-glass windows
