Music Ministry seeking new members

Each year at this time the music ministry seeks new members for the coming year.

There are four ways in which you might participate:

  • The Choir
  • The Bell Choir
  • The Instrumental group
  • The Ministry of Sound Design

Please take a moment to read the descriptions below and if called, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Director of Music Ministries:

John Uehlein (juehlein@sfxavier.org or 646-573-0099)

The Xavier Choir

This community of 30 – 40 singers meets twice a week: Thursday evening for rehearsal from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm and on Sunday morning at 10:30 am to prepare to lead the congregation in musical worship at the 11:30 am liturgy.

We also sing for all major Holy Days (Christmas and Easter). We occasionally sing for special events including our annual Lessons and Carols, and this year the Fauré Requiem.

Ability to carry a tune and sing in harmony is required. Ability to read music is an added plus, but is not required.  We are looking for members in all categories: soprano, alto, tenor and bass, but are especially in need of tenors and basses this year.

The Xavier Bell Choir

This community of 10 ringers continues to grow by leaps and bounds. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm. We play at all major Holy Days (Christmas and Easter), we play every Sunday from Easter time to Pentecost. This year, we are hoping to play once a month on regular Sundays as well as during Advent.
We are presently expanding from three octaves of bells to four and are seeking 3 or 4 additional ringers. The ability to read a little music, especially rhythms is necessary.

The Xavier Musicians

This Instrumental Group currently consists of mandolin, flute, Celtic harp, violin and piano. We are currently seeking new members.  On our wish list, we dream about cello, bassoon, saxophone, percussion, guitar and bass. However, all other instruments are welcome.

The group meets on Sundays at 3:45 pm and prepares for the 5:00 pm mass that day.   We also have several extra rehearsals throughout the year for the major holidays (Christmas and Easter).

The ability to read music is necessary. We are looking for players of at least medium level ability.

The Ministry of Sound Design

We are hoping to form a new ministry to create the sound design for our Sunday liturgies, and especially for our big Holidays (Christmas and Easter).

An advanced knowledge of how to work with digital sound mixers (Yamaha SL-9/32 channels) and microphones is necessary. Our music making is superb. What we need now is an individual or a few individuals who work their magical artistry with the digital palette.  We have a real need so if you have this ability; please consider serving the parish in this way.
